Surrender to What Is. Let Go of What Was. Have Faith in What Will Be.

-- Sonia Ricotti

Three sentences. Twelve words. And yet within them, an entire roadmap for how to move through life with grace.

Sonia Ricotti has spent her life studying what it takes to bounce back from adversity, to find peace in the middle of chaos, and to rebuild when everything seems lost. And again and again, she returns to this simple, profound truth:

Surrender to what is. Let go of what was. Have faith in what will be.

Let's sit with each part.

Surrender to What Is

Surrender is a word that makes many of us uncomfortable. We have been taught that surrender means defeat -- that it means giving up, giving in, admitting that we could not handle what life threw at us.

But that is not what Ricotti means. And it is not what surrender, in its truest sense, actually is.

To surrender to what is means to stop fighting reality. It means accepting the present moment -- not because you approve of everything in it, not because you are content with how things are, but because resistance to what already exists only creates suffering without changing anything.

The traffic jam is real. The diagnosis is real. The relationship that ended is real. The job that was lost is real. Fighting against the reality of these things -- wishing they were different, raging at their existence, refusing to accept that they happened -- does not undo them. It only keeps you locked in a battle you cannot win.

Surrender says: this is what is. I acknowledge it. I accept it. Now I can decide what to do next.

That is not weakness. That is the beginning of real power.

Let Go of What Was

Yesterday has a powerful pull on us.

We carry old versions of ourselves -- who we used to be, what we used to have, how things used to feel. We carry old wounds, old stories, old identities that may no longer fit who we are becoming. And we carry them not because they serve us, but because releasing them feels like losing something essential.

But what was is gone. It exists now only in memory and in the meaning we assign to it. And while the past has shaped us, it does not have to define us.

Letting go of what was is an act of profound self-compassion. It is saying to yourself: I honor what happened. I learned from it. And I am no longer going to let it be the ceiling on my future.

The version of you that existed before the loss, before the failure, before the heartbreak -- that version served its purpose. But you are not going back. You are going forward. And forward requires open hands.

Have Faith in What Will Be

This is perhaps the most courageous part of all.

Faith -- real faith -- is not certainty. It is not knowing exactly how things will unfold or being guaranteed a specific outcome. Faith is the choice to trust the process even when you cannot see the destination. It is the decision to believe that what is coming is worth moving toward, even when the path is unclear.

Having faith in what will be means releasing the need to control every outcome. It means trusting that the same life that brought you this far has not abandoned you now. It means believing -- even on the hard days, especially on the hard days -- that something good is still possible.

That belief is not naive. It is the engine of every comeback, every recovery, every person who found their way through something they were not sure they could survive.

The Practice

Surrender. Release. Trust.

Not once, but daily. Not perfectly, but consistently. Not because it is easy, but because it is the path to a life that is genuinely free.

Today, wherever you are, whatever you are carrying -- try it. Surrender to what is. Let go of what was. Have faith in what will be.

The life waiting for you on the other side of that practice is worth every step.
